T.J. Davies Company, Inc recently provided aspiring engineers with a firsthand look at engineering by sponsoring the Emerging Engineer Camp hosted by the Kent State University College of Aeronautics and Engineering. A week-long full-day program for 25 students in grades 9-12 and a three-full-day program for 25 students in grades 6-8 provided opportunities to explore engineering through hands-on experiments, real-world engineering, and field trips to local manufacturers. Camp topics included computer aided design, building a car, introduction to aerodynamics, basics of flight, virtual reality lab, building and launching rockets, foundry and tooling, and a final design project for the high schoolers. KSU faculty, students, and industry leaders served as teachers and mentors for the camp. This was the largest group in recent memory for the Kent State engineering camp, and the first time that T.J. Davies has stepped up as a sponsor.
“There are exciting opportunities for engineers and STEM careers across a broad range of industries, and this is a great way to get students thinking about manufacturing,” said Sherry Davies, President of T.J. Davies. “It looks like the kids had a blast and learned a lot. I hope they continue to pursue STEM opportunities.”
The Emerging Engineer Camp was presented by MAGNET and the Portage Development Board. The Portage Development Board is a 501 (3) (c ) private non-profit that assists industrial realtors, builders, local industries, and local communities in an effort to maintain and improve the economic base in Portage County.
“We’ve benefitted greatly from our participation in the Portage Development Board, so we’re pleased to give back by sponsoring this meaningful and fun endeavor,” said Davies.
