Cleveland Clinic announced their Top 10 Medical Innovations of 2018 at a multi-media presentation in the 2017 Medical Innovation Summit. Their number one pick for 2018 is artificial pancreas and Altek is one of the players in this cutting-edge industry. By leveraging its design expertise in miniaturization, wireless communication, precision of motor control, functional safety, medical software development, and the medical industry standard manufacturing process, Altek completed the product design by the end of 2017 and provide it for their customer to conduct the clinical study now.
Altek started its medical business in 2008 and started shipping premium blood glucose meters for global Tier 1 customer at the end of 2011 after 3 years of rigorous development. For people who need multiple daily insulin therapy, the whole insulin injection process may feel tedious and painful. Therefore, some of them are reluctant to carry out the needed therapy until their bodies have suffered from irreversible damages. To improve the quality of life for people with diabetes, Altek started the artificial pancreas development project with its major medical partner in 2012. This project includes design and manufacturing with mass production goal at the end of 2018.
This innovative system integrates the continuous glucose monitoring, intelligent algorithm and insulin delivery together. It will provide a more convenient and precise blood glucose control than traditional pen injections. According to the latest statistics from International Diabetes Federation, there are more than 425 million people with diabetes today, of which about 5% are affected by Type 1 diabetes. People with type 1 diabetes need daily insulin injections to maintain their glucose level in the proper range. Artificial pancreas will be the best way to deliver continuous and precise insulin for these people.
After years of investments, Altek is able to establish a world class medical development team and complete the design of this Class IIb product. With proven record on design, verification, manufacturing, quality control, process management, and document control, Altek will continue its vision - better life for everyone - by bringing more innovated medical products to the market.
