To start with, the design continues along its already successful path of addressing medical industry requirements, with the standard HG line offering:
1. Plastic outer bodies are lighter weight and provide insulation for patient protection
2. Push-pull mating for quick and easy use in fast-paced medical environments
3. A design, providing an aesthetic appearance on medical equipment
4. Smooth contours that facilitate ease of cleaning and eliminate sharp corners, which have the potential to tear surgical gloves
5. Sealing to IP67, which is standard for use in demanding medical environments
6. Materials that meet medical sterilization and cleaning requirements, including Autoclaving, Gamma, EtO, and Sterrad
7. Color-coding in five standard colors to distinguish between similar connections
8. Customer configurable keying to prevent mis-mating
9. Plug design that provides standard silicone bend relief or which can be over-molded to the cable
10. Crimp contacts, shipped loose, are standard for simpler and faster termination, to lower the cost of cable assembly; compared to soldering fine gauge wires into a tightly packed nest of solder tails as is standard in competitive products
11. Contacts are finger-proof per IEC60601 standard
New capabilities of the enhanced HG line include:
1. Reliability up to at least 20K mating cycles, far surpassing competitive product offerings and imparting a safety margin over typical medical requirements of 5,000 to 10,000 mating cycles
2. Coaxial and/or fiber optic contact options for high frequency and high speed medical imaging applications
3. Full 360° internal metal shielding option, within the plastic body, to protect sensitive medical devices from harmful EMI and RFI interference
In the final analysis, medical customers have a broad range of choices in circular plastic connectors. This said, Hypertronics’ enhanced HG series delivers all of the features required for use on critical medical equipment, and the line does this with more reliability to the customer in a competitively priced, aesthetically pleasing, easy to use, plastic circular connector.
