Live tooling for turning machines

A new design in live tooling for Swiss and standard turning machines is a whirling head designed for Tornos machines with a modular output, where the operator only loosens three tapered screws to change the adapter.

With other systems, the user has to take the entire toolholder out of the machine to take the ring off and change inserts. Developed by W & F Werkzeugtechnic Germany, and distributed by Alouette Tool Co. Ltd., the system allows the toolholder to stay in place in the machine when machinists are changing the inserts. The insert ring is mounted as a single piece on the modular adapter so machinists are able to change out adapters in one minute.

The design has a total indicated runout at the face of the ring of less than 2µm, which enables all inserts to cut equally, delivering longer insert life.

Turn-mill center

The INDEX G220 turn-mill center includes a motorized 5-axis milling spindle and a tool turret with Y-axis, providing maximum machining flexibility for turning and milling complex parts in a single setup.

With a distance of 1,280mm between the main and counter spindle and a maximum turning length of 1,000mm, the G220 provides a generous work area. The fluid-cooled, identical main and counter spindles feature a clearance of 65mm (chuck up to maximum 250mm diameter), and provide power of 20kW/24kW (100%/40%), a torque of 135Nm/190Nm and a maximum speed of 5,000rpm.

A tool turret, located in the lower part of the machine, can accommodate VDI 25 and VDI 30 tool mountings in 18 or 12 stations, all of which can be equipped with individually driven tools (power 6kW, torque 18Nm, speed 7,200rpm).

The fluid-cooled 5-axis motorized milling spindle (power 11kW, torque 30Nm, speed up to 18,000rpm) has hydrostatic bearings in the Y- and B-axis. The stable circular guide further ensures excellent rigidity and damping. The Y-axis features a ±80mm stroke. The B-axis driven directly by a torque motor has a swivel range of -35° to 215°. With a large travel distance in the X-direction, machining at up to 30mm below the turning center height is possible.

The motorized milling spindle operates using a one- or optionally two-row tool chain magazine, featuring space for 70 or 140 tools (HSK-A40). The double-row tool magazine enables setup during machining time.

Low profile vise

The Fixture Pro vise features a low profile to provide extended work area above the vise (increased Z travel). The design and manufacture maintains the same strength characteristics of the company’s larger vises, ensuring stability, repeatability, and long service life. This vise offers a wide jaw width and is available with standard mounting as well as the company’s modular Drop & Lock version for 5-axis and multi-axis applications ensuring accuracy and quick change-over time.

Jergens’ Value Added Solutions Team (VAST) offers application expertise and provides custom solutions using either standard or custom tooling.

Linear DC weld control

Operating in constant current mode, constant voltage mode, or both, the MDA-10000A welds optical sensor parts, crystal oscillators, and projection welds. The first mode applies constant current to a workpiece regardless of the resistance, ensuring stable welding. Constant voltage mode stabilizes voltage from the beginning of the welding, reducing weld splash. If both options are selected, constant voltage eliminates weld splash in the initial phase, and constant current supports stable welding. Control timing can be precisely set to support specific application needs.

Up to 12 MDA-10000A power supplies can be connected in a slave/master configuration to design the right system for high-power/short-process welding. One master unit controls and stabilizes current from all connected units, eliminating the need to set separate weld schedules.

Swiss-type lathe with B-axis

The Nexturn SA32XII Swiss lathe is a 32mm machine available with or without a rotary synchronous guide bushing. It features up to nine total axes (Z1, X1, Y1, Z2, X2, Y2, C1, C2, and optional B) and up to 33 total tools with the B-axis (29 without), including 19 live tools. Machining capacity is 32mm on the main spindle, 32mm on the sub-spindle, and 210mm (8") maximum turning length in one chucking (60mm or 2.36" without guide bushing).

The main spindle is a 10hp, 8,000rpm built-in motor spindle. The built-in motor provides outstanding acceleration/deceleration. The full C-axis on both main and sub spindles with 0.001° position and pneumatic disc brake clamping provide high rigidity for milling operations. The synchronous sub spindle allows simultaneous front and back working.

With 1.3hp and 6,000rpm, a wide range of milling, drilling, and tapping can be performed. ER-16 collets (ER-11 for back tools on the optional B-axis) for the live tools provide excellent rigidity. Rigid tapping is standard. The optional B-axis, used primarily for milling, drilling, and tapping angled holes, provides zero to 135° of swiveling rotation with three front-side and three back-side live tools. The front-side tools can be used for front- and face-work, doubling the useful tools.

The Nexturn SA32XII Swiss lathe is built for rigidity, accuracy, reliability, and ease of use. The highly rigid one-piece cast iron machine bed is designed using FEM software. The use of ultra-precision pre-tensioned ball screws and LM guides produce high accuracy. High speed positioning of 1,260ipm reduces cycle times.

Efficient coordinate measuring machine

The Contura coordinate measuring machine (CMM) has a range of measuring volumes from 700mm x 700mm x 600mm up to 1,200mm x 2,400mm x 1,000mm. The machine’s efficient, highly precise air bearings can reduce compressed air consumption by up to 60%. Reliable measuring comes from the interaction of its components: design, sensors, software, and service.

The direkt model enables scanning and is designed for small workpieces, for which a small single or star stylus is sufficient to measure the form, size, and location. The RDS model’s articulating probe holder can be freely positioned in 2.5° increments, resulting in more than 20,000 positions that can be calculated in just a few minutes. Its sensor interface permits fast optical measurement features with the use of contact and optical sensors, including the Zeiss LineScan sensor. The aktiv configuration is for measurements deep inside a part or for additional demands on precision and speed, which enable highly accurate measurements with very long, heavy stylus systems.

Metal laser sintering hybrid milling

The LUMEX Avance-25 metal laser sintering hybrid milling machine relies on one-machine, one-process manufacturing of complex molds and parts by fusing metal laser sintering (3D SLS) technology with high-speed milling technology. The machine enables production of complicated parts using digital engineering and 3D data. LUMEX Avance-25 achieves high accuracy in part fabrication because metal powders are melted and sintered via laser, while surfaces are precisely milled at high speeds.
