Innovative marking solutions
Precise and efficient laser marking workstations, the FOBA M1000 and M2000 are capable of marking GS1 DataMatrix codes to support the FDA’s new Unique Device Identifier (UDI) madate, which identifies medical devices within the health care supply chain.
The broad range of systems and workstations is for labelling medical and surgical devices, implants, and products. Directly integrated in the systems is the high-speed camera system IMP, which provides a closed-loop process that includes the pre- and post-mark validation.
Important for medical device manufacturers is that during the post-mark verification process, the content of 1D and 2D (Datamatrix (ECC200) GS1 compliant and graded) codes can be directly read, eliminating the need for third-party hardware, or separate inspection process, as the vision system is integrated in the marking system.

Software delivers greater reductions in machining time
PowerMILL 2015’s Vortex area-clearance strategy produces safe tool paths with a much deeper cut by using a controlled engagement angle that maintains the optimum cutting conditions for the whole tool path. As a result, higher feed rates and material-removal rates are possible, making the cutting time shorter by as much as 70%.
Two additional enhancements in PowerMILL 2015 will give even greater reductions in machining time compared to conventional roughing. The first change allows tool paths to approach the part from outside the stock at the cutting height for open pockets or in areas where earlier cuts have made this possible. Previously, all entry moves had to be made by plunging onto the surface or by ramping into the material.
The second change allows an increased feed rate to be set for non-cutting moves. The default value is set at double the rate for the cutting moves but this can be altered as required for each machine tool. The extra time that can be saved depends on the shape of the part, but an additional saving of around 20% should be expected.
Companies using PowerMILL for either positional or continuous 5-axis machining will benefit from improvements to the collision checking within the software. First, collision checking has been changed so that warnings can also be flagged for near misses. Second, the display showing the list of collisions, and near misses as well, has been updated to be easier to read.

Lube coolant clamp
Multidec-LUBE coolant thru toolholder clamp for CNC Swiss machines permits optimum coolant jet positioning, eliminates time bending and aiming coolant lines, reduces overall setup time, and prevents stringy chips collecting on cutting tools. The patented design incorporates a coolant/oil delivery passage in the tool clamp that ensures a repeatable jet flow even after multiples tool changes or setups. This feature allows use of conventional square shank tool holders as if they were coolant-thru since the coolant travels through the clamp and can remain semi-permanently plumbed into the high-pressure system.

CAM engine powers GibbsCAM 2015
GibbsCAM UKM (universal kinematic machine), the new engine behind the upcoming release of GibbsCAM 2015, is a complete reengineering of the CAM engine and how it relates to machine definitions and machine tools, blurring the line between the definition of mills and lathes.
A complete paradigm shift, the GibbsCAM UKM engine has benefits that extend throughout the entire product line, not just those areas relating to complex machines. Dramatic improvements to rendering and machine simulation provide the accurate simulation, giving customers the confidence that what they see on the computer screen is what will happen at the machine. Machine simulation and post-processors are built on the same kinematic model, optimizing the programmer’s time and ensuring complete accuracy.
The new UKM architecture is backward compatible, so current post-processors and machine simulation models for GibbsCAM will continue to provide a return on investment.

Toolholding, workholding technology
The PRECI-FLEX modular quick-change tooling system features a selection of adapters engineered to hold different cutting tool and shank designs. The adapters’ common connecting feature locks into a standard base unit on the machine turret, enabling tool/adapter assemblies to be preset offline then quickly switch in and out of the base unit. Tool positions repeat within ±3µm, eliminating the need to re-center, touch off, or make test cuts.
The PRECI-FLEX conical and flat-face planar interface duplicates the taper of the standard ER collet, enabling ER collets – at lesser repeatability – to be used along with PRECI-FLEX adapters to mount collets, end mill holders, expanding collet chucks and shrink fit tooling on a single base holder. Operated at the front face of the turret, the connector provides two tons of clamping force, and its compact design maximizes torque transmission and rigidity, increasing accuracy and productivity.
