Implanting success

High-precision laser cutting system

The StarCut Tube 4-axis precision laser cutting system is for high-precision processing of tube material for medical implants and instruments and various other tube and sheet material applications. From its original release, ROFIN engineers have revised the current 5th StarCut Tube generation and added several improvements.

The new high-precision cutting head BAK-MC features consistent optical properties, allowing micro-adjust of the assist gas nozzle in the X/Y plane without changing the beam guidance. With the integrated drawer, theh operator does not hae to dismantle the machine in order to changethe protective glass.

Offering a width of 600mm, the enlarged working chamber provides enough room for long parts and/or customer-specific handlings. A drawer allows removal of finished parts at any time during ongoing production – even during wet cutting. If 600mm are not enough, for instance for hypo-tube cutting, the automatic part removal system can be added.

BAK MC processing head
The BAK with easily replaceable protective glass was specifically constructed for cutting and drilling applications in the micro-sector. The processing head with the optimized nozzle and focus adjustment gives a high-quality system optimized for industrial applications.

Precision honing system

The HTE honing system produces ideal bore geometry and surface finish while eliminating problems from bad tool-to-part alignment and excessive feed rates that cause tool breaks and scrap parts. The new tube hone’s one-piece base maintains tool/part alignment, and the feed system provides protection against tool overloading. Tool-specific force limits and run settings are stored in the Windows-based touch-screen control. A feed system senses tight sections in the part and corrects them automatically.

The HTE’s servo-controlled, variable speed spindle (5rpm to 2,100rpm) and stroke motors (1fpm to 98fpm, 1mpm to 30mpm) produce consistent stock removal rates. The HTE can utilize a variety of Sunnen tooling types including MMT, LFT-DX, and GH tools.

Three fixturing options are available: a manual chuck, a pneumatic chuck, or a V-type chain vise for parts with ODs up to 6" (150mm). A travelling steady rest is standard. An optional guide pot automatically guides the honing tool straight into the bore without operator assistance. Standard, non-CE guarding includes easily removable covers for each end of the honed part, while optional CE guarding includes a light curtain and wire mesh enclosure.

More to know…
The Sunnen HTE honing system:

  • One-piece base design aligns tool and part to optimize bore geometry and surface finish
  • The feed system protects against tool overloading and breakage when processing long, small-bore parts down to 0.160" (4mm) diameter
  • The HTE handles parts up to 60" (1,524mm) long and has an ID range of 0.160" to 0.750" (4mm to 19mm)

Low-cost, small-scale waterjet systems

The Emerald 0606 and the Emerald 0612 are the smallest waterjets ever manufactured by WardJet.

Designed with ballscrew drives and a cantilever-style arm, the Emerald 0606 offers a cutting envelope of 2ft x 2ft and 12" of Z-axis travel. This short-travel, cantilever architecture effectively balances the reduced machine footprint and number of moving parts of the Emerald 0606, while maximizing cutting envelope and maintaining overall stiffness.

The Emerald 0612 offers double the cutting envelope at 2ft x 4ft. The cantilever-style arm is ballscrew driven, the tank is reinforced for extra support, and the overall footprint is small. The Emerald 0612 offers the advantage of indexing sheets of unlimited length from front to back – standard 4ft x 8ft sheets of material up to 2" thick can be cut.

Emerald 0606 standard specifications

  • Footprint: 1.49m x 1.46m (gantry only)
  • X-Y travel: 0.60m x 0.60m
  • Max. number of Z-carriages: 2
  • Mini hopper: One WardJet Infini Hopper per cutting head
  • Bulk feed hopper: 136.08kg (300 lb) pressurized standard
  • Drive mechanism: Ballscrew driven in all axes
  • Linear positional accuracy: ±0.08mm per axis
  • Repeatability: ±0.03mm/axis
