Nanopositioning system

Based on a patented piezowalk motor, the N-725 provides travel ranges of up to 2.0mm along the optical axis to help change the focal plane quickly and precisely. Despite its size, the device combines the performance of two individual stages: a fine focus piezo drive and a stepper motor positioner for coarse, long travel motion.

The challenge was to implement the high-stiffness piezo motor in a compact mechanical housing no larger than PI’s previous piezo-flexure-actuator-based PIFOC objective stages. The new long-travel piezo motor provides 5 to 20 times the travel range, sub-nanometer resolution, and locks into a position, without further need for power.

All-metal medical components

Porous metal products play a variety of roles in medical device designs providing dependable filtration performance by controlling fluid flow as well as diffusion and metering of fluids and drugs. Rigid and robust, porous metal affords designers properties that often solve challenging medical and life sciences problems.

Available as an option is an all-metal membrane that meets ASTM F838-05 for bacterial retention. These sterilizing-grade membranes are supplied in 316L stainless steel or titanium and in a variety of form factors – from very small discs or tubes for drug delivery applications to 10" cartridges for biotechnology and pharmaceutical processing. This proprietary membrane can withstand aggressive chemistries and drug cocktails without the potential for leaching, outgassing, or other adverse reactions. Mott porous metal components are available with filtration ratings from sub-micron (0.100μm) to coarser filtration ratings, including 0.200μm sterilizing grade media. Also available are specialized gas filters that can achieve nearly perfect efficiency for particles as small as 0.003μm.

Distributed modular I/O solutions

Expanded mini springs with metric sizes

Bantam mini compression springs offer more than 100 new metric designs. The products respond to customers’ requirements for off-the-shelf stock springs that fit shrinking spatial parameters. The metric Bantam series starts at wire diameter 0.10mm, slightly thicker than a human hair, with outside diameters from 0.81mm to 1.65mm, and free lengths from 1.00mm to 14.00mm. The existing inch or imperial Bantam spring offerings range from wire diameter 0.0040" to 0.0055", and in outside diameters from 0.0250" to 0.0570".

These miniature stock springs combine strength with corrosion resistance using Elgiloy, a high-temperature-resistant, non-magnetic nickel alloy that is 10% stronger than Type 316 stainless steel. Bantam mini compression springs are used in applications ranging from medical instrumentation to surgical tools as well as telecommunication devices, computer hardware, and digital equipment.

Elgiloy is a high-strength cobalt-nickel alloy. It exhibits superior resistance in most corrosive environments including acetic acid, ammonium chloride, citric acid, sodium chloride, and sodium sulfite. Non-magnetic Elgiloy performs well in temperatures up to 454°C (850°F).

Self-clinching threaded studs

PEM self-clinching threaded studs are available in an expanded range of designs in order to offer solutions for thin metal attachments. PEM studs provide alternatives to weld studs and other joining methods, enabling easier installation with fewer production steps and more reliable performance. They install quickly, securely, and permanently using a standard press.

The product lineup includes flush-head studs for use in aluminum or steel sheets as thin as 0.04"/1.00mm and stainless versions offering optimum corrosion resistance in even thinner stainless steel assemblies

Then there are:

  • Low-displacement flush head studs for effective close-to-edge installation
  • Non-flush studs for sheets as thin as 0.02"/0.51mm
  • Heavy-duty studs whose heads project above the thin host sheet distribute axial tightening force over a larger area and improve pull-through resistance
  • High tensile strength studs whose medium carbon alloy steel is heat-treated for high strength and hardness to withstand application demands
  • BUSBAR studs functioning as electrical/mechanical attachment points
  • Concealed-head studs where the sheet opposite installation will remain smooth and unmarred.
