Implanting Success

Improved Functionality
PartMaker Version 2013 R2 features improved 4- and 5-axis simultaneous milling functionality, and applies across the entire PartMaker CAM suite, including the PartMaker Mill, Turn-Mill, and SwissCAM modules. The new 4- and 5-axis milling product functionality is known as ASM-MX, or Advanced Surface Machining – Multi-Axis. In addition to providing unique 4- and 5-axis simultaneous milling functionality, ASM-MX has also been priced cost-effectively relative to other high-end milling CAM systems on the market. The 4- and 5-axis simultaneous milling strategies found in ASM-MX in PartMaker Version 2013R2 are based on the same unique approach to multiaxis programming used in Delcam’s PowerMILL. ASM-MX provides the user complete tool-axis control for all 5-axis simultaneous machining strategies. Additionally, ASM-MX features a unique new machining strategy called Spine Finishing, used for either 4- or 5-axis simultaneous operations and is ideal for machining parts with unique curves.

Workholding Products

Featured products from Hardinge’s line of collets include the FlexC Vulcanized systems for CNC lathes. Changing of the flexible collet heads can be done in less than 10 seconds. The Hardinge FlexC collet system is an ideal substitute for three-jaw chucks because it weighs less, has a lower profile, and changes over much faster.

Hardinge Sure-Grip expanding collet systems mount directly to the machine spindle or collet styles mount in the spindle of Hardinge collet-ready CNC lathes, collet blocks, indexers, and rotary tables. There are no costly adapters to mount the arbor onto the spindle. Standard products are in stock to grip inside diameters from 1/8" up to 4".

Tools with Side Clamping Mechanism

Design of the Swiss-type machine turret makes it difficult, or sometimes even impossible, to replace inserts on standard screw-clamped tools without removing the tool from the machine. Answering that issue is the GEHSR/L-SL tool family for Swiss-type and screw machines, which offers a clamping mechanism to solve problems related to insert clamping and replacement on Swiss-type and screw machines. An improved style of the current GEHSR/L screw-clamped tools, this user-friendly system enables clamping the insert by using the key from either free side of the tool, dramatically shortening insert indexing time. The GEHSR/L-SL tools are available in 3/8", 10mm, 12mm, 1/2", and 5/8" shank sizes.

Precision 5-Axis Machining
The recently introduced C 400, a 5-axis machining center incorporates the popular patented gantry design, mineral cast base, and rugged construction in a compact footprint priced for entry-level shops and manufacturers seeking quality in a startup package. With an X-, Y-, Z-axis of 850mm, 700mm, and 500mm, a 15,000rpm/18,000rpm main spindle capability, and integrated 38-position tool changer, the C 400 basic answers that demand.

Another industry demand is more automation, so also available are multiple options and engineered systems, such as the PW150 pallet change system with a C 22 machining center and the PW3000 for the C 60. The PW3000 improves the appeal of one of the more popular configurations, the C 60, and is capable of handling parts up to 2,500kg. The C 60’s 5-axis capability is ideal for those machining 3-axis and 4-axis parts. Use of the PW3000 enhances this capability by allowing the user to set up additional parts in advance.

Machine Tool Technology

While the sleek exterior design of the Hurco machines with the new Hurco logo is the most noticeable difference from the classic Hurco machine tools, the inclusion of UltiMotion is the most significant technological difference. UltiMotion is only available on Hurco mills, both 3-axis and 5-axis. This patented feature reduces cycle time by up to 30% and significantly increases surface finish quality.

The 5-axis VM10Ui mill has X, Y, and Z travels of 21" x 16" x 19", X, Y, and Z rapids of 945ipm, a 20-station ATC, and the integrated Hurco control that supports both ISO/EIA NC programming and conversational programming. For customers who do not have simultaneous 5-axis work right now, the Hurco 5-axis machines include 5-sided conversational programming that instantly makes each part more profitable.

The TMM8i mill turn, slant-bed lathe with live tooling has X-axis travels of 7.8" and Z-axis travels of 20", a maximum turning diameter of 10.1", a maximum turning length of 17.9", and a maximum bar capacity of 2".

CNC for the Job Shop
New versions of Siemens’ popular, compact CNC for the job shop, the 828D are now available.

The Sinumerik 828D BASIC T addresses the needs of shop floor turning machines, combining the CNC, PLC, operator panel, and axis control for five axes/spindles, including live tooling. In tandem with the new Sinamics S120 Combi drives package, the 828D BASIC T represents a new level of efficiency and virtually maintenance-free operation, as the fans, hard disks, and batteries of past CNC generations have been eliminated.

Sinumerik 828D Basic M
Similarly, the Sinumerik 828D BASIC M class features the same quality performance as the T class, but for use on milling machines. Even in complex mold making operations, mirror-smooth surfacing and reduced machining times are enabled. Again, in tandem with the Sinamics S120 Combi drives package and Simotics feed and spindle motors, the 828D BASIC T will operate a milling machine at the highest level of performance possible. Superior axis and spindle dynamics within a broad speed bandwidth yield quality workpieces, every time.

Sinumerik 828D
The Sinumerik 828D is capable of full graphical, high-level language command and supports ISO programming that is customary in the U.S. This control family is ideal for single-part and small-batch production. Programming time can be further reduced for small-batch production with the use of the ShopMill and ShopTurn graphical work step programming systems, while high-level language programming can be used in conjunction with programGuide to reduce programming times, significantly, for large-scale serial production.

Five-Axis Developments

It is no surprise that 5-axis machining continues to become more popular as companies become more aware of its ability to boost productivity by increasing efficiency, improving quality, and shortening delivery times.

For the latest PowerMILL release, the main change in the 5-axis capabilities has been to increase the number of options for tool-axis definition. For faster tool paths, the lead and lean angles can now be defined relative to a contact normal. In addition, better control is now possible for the tool-axis definition when using the “To or From a Point, Line, or Curve” strategies. These improvements make it easier for users to control the contact angle between the cutter and the part, and set the optimum cutting conditions for efficient machining and high quality surface finish. The resulting NC programs can be made even more efficient by automatically reordering the tool paths or other options.
