Non-Magnetic Encoders
A line of encoders that are non-magnetic, available from Numerik Jena, have been tested in environments up to 6 Tesla and have no influence on the machine environment. The encoders also can withstand this high magnetic environment without loss of accuracy or resolution and are mechanically stable. Numerik Jena’s non-magnetic LIK linear series has a 20µ graduation on glass and digital versions can output resolutions to 50nm, where the digitizing electronics reside in the connector. With loose mounting tolerances of the scanning unit in relation to the 20µ scale, and three configurations of mounting the scanning unit, the LIK series provides excellent motion feedback for high magnetic environments.

Both encoder systems use the Epiflex Adjustment Tool to enhance the signal margin during installation on the machine. Long cable extensions are also possible for high magnetic field environments.

Low Profile Linear Motor, Voice Coil
The development of an ultra-low profile linear motor is now available. The C12 Series is a 3-phase brushless linear servomotor that can also operate from a brush-type servo drive as a cost-effective single-phase voice coil motor. It has a 12.7mm profile making it the smallest in the industry for an Ironless motor.

Some features include:

  • Operates as 3-φ brushless linear servo motor or 1-φ voice coil
  • Non-cogging ironless design
  • Maximum bandwidth >100Hz
  • Vacuum and clean room options

Four-Quadrant Powerful PWM Servo Controller
Maxon’s new ESCON 36/2 DC is a 4-quadrant PWM servo controller for use with DC motors up to 72W. This very fast digital current controller, with enormous bandwidth for optimal motor current/torque control, provides drift-free yet extremely dynamic speed behavior through a speed range of 1rpm to 150,000rpm.

When matched up with maxon’s range of motors, high demanding and dynamic drive solutions are possible. Additionally, it can be run in various operating modes – speed controller (closed loop), speed controller (open loop), and current controller.

Control of this ultra-compact servo controller is by means of an analog set value. Specification of the value can be by means of analog voltage, an external or internal potentiometer, a defined value, or by means of a PWM signal with variable duty cycle. Other functions include the ability to enable or disable the power stage depending on the direction of rotation, or to use speed ramps for acceleration and deceleration. The speed can be regulated by means of a digital incremental encoder (2-channel, with/without line driver), DC tacho, or without encoder (IxR compensation).

Designed to be user-friendly with an easy start-up, no in-depth knowledge of drive technology is required. When the servo controller connects to a PC via a USB port, configuration is easy and efficient with the ESCON Studio graphical user interface. During startup and configuration of the inputs and outputs, monitoring, data recording, and diagnostics, the user has access to a large variety of functions, with assistance by user-friendly software wizards, as well as an automatic procedure for fine-tuning the controller. It comes fully equipped with everything required. No additional external filters or motor chokes are required and pre-assembled cables for the startup are available as accessories.

The ESCON 36/2 DC has protective circuits against over current, excess temperature, under- and over-voltage, against voltage transients and against short-circuits in the motor cable. It is equipped with protected digital inputs and outputs and an adjustable current limitation for protecting the motor and the load. Monitoring of the motor current and the actual speed of the motor shaft is by means of the analog output voltage.

Hermetic Connector Options Available
Design engineers who need to reduce component size and weight without compromising electrical performance have a new hermetic connector option, following the release of Souriau PA&E’s new Mini Micro-D Connector.

These Mini-Micro-D connectors are for hermetic applications where reducing size and weight are priorities. They have a 27% lower profile than standard Micro-D connectors have, with a design to be laser welded into aluminum, titanium, or kovar housings. These new hermetic connectors are MIL-PRF-83513/7 interface compliant and mate with connectors manufactured to MIL-PRF-83513/8.

Souriau PA&E’s Mini Micro-D connectors are configurable with 9, 15, 21, 25, 31, and 37 pin counts. Its beryllium-copper pins support 600VAC and 3A per pin, and each hermetically sealed pin is with Souriau PA&E’s poly-crystalline ceramic, Kryoflex. They provide greater than 5,000 megohms of insulation resistance at 500VDC and exhibit no evidence of dielectric withstanding voltage breakdown when tested in accordance with MIL-STD-1344, Method 3003. These new hermetic Micro-D connectors have a leak rate of less than 1X10-9 cc/second of helium at one atmospheric differential pressure, operating reliably at temperatures from -65°C to 200°C.
