Features Facilitate Titanium Splicing, Welding on a Bias
Noted for its non-contact splicing process that incorporates laser cutting and welding with a single head, new features available on the system will enable the splicing of titanium coils as well as splicing on a 15° bias as an alternative to forming perpendicular joints. The Infinite Web dramatically increases throughput, and with the ability to service multiple converting lines, the Infinite Web is a truly mobile, stand-alone system requiring only an electrical input and minimal operator involvement. Designed by welders to handle material thicknesses from 0.002" to 0.040", the Infinite Web uses coaxial optics to verify proper positioning and provide precise and accurate splices.

Polycarbonate Blends for Medical Housings
An addition to the Emerge Advanced Resins family is Emerge PC/PET 9100CR Advanced Resin. The resin is a polycarbonate blend with superior chemical resistance properties, designed specifically for medical equipment housing applications.

Feedback from trials of Emerge PC/PET 9100CR Advanced Resin indicates that it provides a unique aesthetically-pleasing appearance and enhanced environmental stress-crack resistance, while maintaining the toughness needed for housings. Emerge PC/PET 9100CR is available in natural and custom color options.

Emerge PC/PET 9100CR augments a portfolio, including Emerge PC/ABS 7600 Advanced Resins. Introduced earlier this year, this biocompatible product is a non-chlorinated, non-brominated, ignition-resistant blend combining the physical properties of polycarbonate with the processability, toughness, and flow of ABS.

Besides offering products for housings under Emerge Advanced Resins, Styron provides resins for single- and multiple-use medical devices under Calibre Polycarbonate Resins. Styron's flagship product, Calibre Megarad Polycarbonate Resins, uses color compensation technology to ensure color stability following gamma- and electron-beam radiation.

Because of Styron's focus on polycarbonate and high-end compounds and blends, the company can work intimately with its medical customers and channel partners – something critical in this highly-regulated industry, where understanding regulatory and compliancy issues is critically important.

Highly Accurate, Redesigned Feed Unit
An updated version of Zagar's most popular feed unit, the Model MQ-150, features a full servo-driven ballscrew feed design that incorporates the unique feature of having the quill and spindle assembly located inside a pre-drilled, precision bored ballscrew. The in-line design provides what is thought to be one of the most accurate feed units on the market, having a stroke repeatability of ±0.0001". The MQ-150 Feed Unit is usable with standard tooling to provide single drilling, tapping, counter boring, and reaming operations. It can also combine with a Zagar Multiple Spindle Head to increase productivity and perform these types of operations on various part locations with one feed unit stroke. With 5hp brushless servomotors and a 6" stroke, the Model MQ-150 provides 2,000 lb of thrust using a 2.17" diameter quill. The spindle has a maximum of 10,000rpm with a rapid traverse of 800ipm.

Most common spindle nose adapters, from a collet chuck holder to HSK type toolholders, are usable. The Model MQ-150 has its own enclosed control cabinet built to NEMA 12 standards. Brushless servomotors are used for feedrate and rpm control. User-friendly software provides easy operator use to input spindle stroke, feedrate, rpm, and drilling or tapping sequences. The built-in PLC is compatible with multiple auto cycling and automatic changeover between stored machining sub-routines. The software provides for peck drilling cycles, rigid tapping, and left or right hand drapping cycles which are a combination of drilling and tapping. Adjustable feed and retract stops are provided.

The Zagar design provides for coolant through the spindle at up to 1,500 lb of pressure. The unit is mountable in a vertical or horizontal position, or at an angle. The MQ-150 can also be provided with a quick change, ball-lock mounting plate for easy changeover to various part applications.
