Indiana is already a national advanced manufacturing and logistics (AML) leader, but to maintain its leadership position and reach global prominence the state must build the workforce of the future and enable Industry 4.0 occupations to increase productivity and competitiveness.

Manufacturing

  • 533,877 – Total jobs
  • $89,555 – Average total compensation
  • $104 billion – Gross regional product (GRP)

This makes Indiana the most manufacturing intensive state when measured by both percent of GRP and number of jobs per capita in the nation.

Logistics

  • 167,633 – total jobs
  • $67,988 – Average total compensation
  • $16 billion – Gross regional product (GRP)

This makes logistics Indiana’s 8th largest industry sector by employment and 9th largest by GRP.

2022 investment

  • 218 companies committed to locate or expand in Indiana
  • $22.2 billion (+250% from 2021) invested in their operations
  • 24,059 new jobs created with an average wage of $34.71/hour (+21.8% from 2021 and +27.6% the state’s average wage)

AML companies steadily adopt digital technologies

  • Cobots
  • Big data and analytics
  • The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT)
  • Machine learning (ML)
  • 3D printing

These growing technologies require a workforce trained in these areas and the state needs to grow labor force participation rate to 65%.

Current 62% labor force participation rate:

  • 5.3 – Million 16+ older
  • 10,000 – High school non-completers
  • 25,000 – High school students without a plan
  • 10,000 – College freshman don’t return
  • 30% – Post-secondary graduates leave Indiana
  • 25% – Retiring workers; 55+ make up 25% of workforce

To get 65% labor participation would equate to 159,000 more Hoosiers employed in advanced manufacturing and logistics.
