New honing technology from Sunnen can be found in a number of honing machines, including the KGM-5000 KROSSGRINDING system. A horizontal, single- spindle system, the KGM-5000 is designed for jobs that require ultra-accurate and consistent size control. The system is capable of holding straightness and roundness tolerances to within 0.00025 mm (0.000010 in.) in a production environment.
The honing process used with the KGM-5000 system does not generate intensive heat, thus improving bore tolerances and eliminating metallurgical heat damage to the parts. The KGM is also capable of honing extremely hard or exotic materials common in the medical industry.
The system can be used with two different types of tooling depending on the application. Sunnen's popular KROSSGRINDING tools are applicable when extreme accuracy and long life are desired (tool wear is next to zero per cycle). For applications requiring faster stock removal, Sunnen's new TurboHone honing tools get the job done quickly and accurately, plus, the abrasives can be reloaded when worn.
The KGM-5000 is easy to set up and operate; setups can be accomplished with the menu-driven Windows NT operating system. With the standard program storage, separate setups can be entered and saved for future production runs. Computer control and adjustment of all machine settings ensures accuracy and reliability.
