High Customer Value is Goal of Quantum Leap

DMG's new machine designs offer increased functionality as well as value-added ergonomics for its customers. Updated designs are also responsible for increased brand recognition and reliability.

After years of innovative strength, resulting in the strong capability of its turning and milling technology, DMG continues as a big-name producer of machine tools, as well as a technological trendsetter. In addition, the appearance of its machines has also set creative standards that make DMG stand out against its competition. The integration of 15" screens into the DMG Control, or the application of high quality stainless steel surfaces of the machine and screen are two examples of a number of design highlights. Such selective standards illustrate the fact that DMG was exclusively motivated by technological challenges in the conception and design of its machine tools.

DMG SOFTkeys open up a new dimension in the area of user comfort.

With the launch of the EMO show in Hannover, Germany, a one-dimensional perspective at DMG is becoming a thing of the past. At the largest international machine tool tradeshow, DMG presented a new machine design that demonstrated the powerful interaction of style, ergonomics and functionality. This new design will serve as the basis for future design developments, expanding well beyond the field of machine tool construction.

At EMO, visitors were able to view a total of 70 high-tech machines in operation, 14 of which were world premieres. DMG's new design itself is revolutionary; it also has more integral ramifications for the sector of industrial goods. This holds true particularly for the machine tool industry because it represents a functional and aesthetic quantum leap, providing the highest customer value.

Application of glossy black surface-tempered synthetic blinds, in the area of the safety glass panels, underscores the new machine designs.

The goal of the new design, according to DMG, is to bring the changes of the brand into the limelight. For that purpose, all machines have been categorized under a common label with standardized characteristics. Aside from the high-grade surface material in matte white or high-gloss black, the DMG LIGHTline is a new feature that spans the lateral door area and the entire height of the respective machine. It also visualizes the operating condition of the machine with diverse colors, rather than with the traditional signal light.

The transparency of the safety glass panels have increased 40% to 80% on all machines in the new design generation. Other manufacturers optically hide the process behind more sheet metal. This difference gives the operators of DMG's high-tech machines the advantage of directly experiencing the chipping process. This results in stronger identification with operations in the work area, ultimately leading to higher quality.

A further highlight in the framework of the new design from DMG is the new ERGOline control that has a 19" screen, which resembles a sophisticated flat screen rather than a machine control. This screen combines the advantages of the former DMG ControlPanel and the DMG SlimLinePanel. Depending on the model, the ERGOline control can be polished on either the left or right side of the workroom with the help of a cantilever. In any case, the larger screen guarantees reading comfort, and enables the integration of supplemental DMG SOFTkeys, as well as further status information – leading to more relaxed, safer and more efficient operations. Moreover, the DMG ERGOline control has a pivoting mechanism through which the screen and the operator panel meet the individual ergonomic challenges of the operator – this also applies to a new seating possibility for the machine operator or the optional mouse pad together with the diagram holder. DMG SOFTkeys open up a new dimension in the area of operator comfort – operators have well-allocated soft keys available for frequently-used operational sequences or screen content.

In its overall appearance and functionality, the DMG ERGOline gives new meaning to the concept of "emotional intelligence." This was demonstrated to observers at EMO, when they tried to look for a conventional lock on the control for choosing diverse operating modes – DMG has replaced the old key cabinet with a DMG SMARTkey system. The appearance of the intelligent SMARTkey resembles a sophisticated MP3 player. Although it does not store music data, it offers far more possibilities beyond operation mode selection. The personalized authorization of the operator – together with the corresponding access rights, or the individualized preparation of the control – are some examples of the many capabilities this system has to offer.

Further examples for the technologically-comprehensive machine designs can be found in the chip conveyor, in the switchboard panel, and in the area of product graphics. Beyond the cited common design elements, all areas of technology have their independent characteristics, making them easily identifiable as superior in their markets.

For example, turning machines from DMG now have a horizontal alignment with a predominant white outer portion, as well as large radii in the upper and lower casing, presenting a more compact overall image. In contrast, milling machines have a cubic appearance, due to a specific distribution of color and a select choice of material, while the laser and ultrasonic machines follow a vertical optical axis.
