For shops requiring bore geometries to within 0.00002 in., Engis singlepass superabrasive technology reportedly surpasses conventional honing in reliably and consistently delivering extremely tight tolerances in production environments at a low overall cost/ finished part. The companys system features controls that reduce cycle times using a combination of software, inprocess sensors, and engineering knowhow.
Singlepass bore finishing involves preset barrelshaped tools passed once through the bore while the tool, part, or both rotate. Tools dont expand and contract during each cycle, and they sport a slowwearing diamond coating, all of which ensures maximum control of bore size.
Customer application dictates tool type, design, and size. They come in standard and customized tooling packages such as standard diamond and CBN plated, blindbore, springloaded, coolantthrough, selfadjusting, and O.D. finishing.
Engis supplies borefinishing systems from tool and fixture design, to machine design, engineering, and manufacturing, to process development, metrology, final runoffs, automation packages, and infield support. Its customized automation packages include both in and outbound product flow and incorporate such equipment as pickandplace units, robotics, inprocess gaging, sensor systems, and conveyors linking automated machining cells.
In addition to its customized machines, Engis has two standard lines, the Performance Series and SPM Series. Performance Series machines include 4, 6, and 8spindle models for parts with bore sizes ranging from 0.060 to 4 in. Their columns are servo fed, and stroke lengths measure 25 in.
For small to mediumsized parts, the SPM Series machines come with 2, 4, or 6 spindles for bores of 1 in. or smaller. Their columns are also servo fed and provide an 18in. stroke.
