All-electric actuation on hot forming, SPF presses

All-electric linear servo actuators are available on hot forming or superplastic forming presses up to 500 tons. Using Beckwood’s LSP technology, new hot forming and SPF presses will have an all-electric option that eliminates the need for traditional fluid power systems. Additionally, existing hot forming presses can be retrofitted with linear servo actuators to reap the same benefits of a new servo machine at a fraction of the cost.

Because LSP systems are fully electric, users experience a simplistic design with up to 80% fewer components than hydraulic presses. Eliminating the hydraulic power units and associated components makes these systems safer, quieter, more efficient, and free of leaks – eliminating the risk for part contamination due to pressurized oil. Reducing the number of moving components also makes electro-mechanical presses easy to set up, maintain, and troubleshoot – Beckwood LSP presses run for millions of cycles before maintenance is required.

Tonnage monitoring and overload protection are standard and extreme bed-to-ram parallelism is a byproduct of the technology. The intuitive programming and cycle parameters offer a high degree of flexibility in configuring speeds, pressures, positions, and recipe creation. The programming infrastructure offers full control with strict part traceability while monitoring key components to ensure system health and part quality.

Washdown tool

Jergens’ washdown tool provides 360° of spray using coolant flow to wash away chips from exposed surfaces. The in-between-processes tool is programmed in-line (as with any standard tool) after a predetermined number of machining cycles. The washdown tool provides thorough chip removal from the many exposed surfaces inside the machining area, reducing the time spent cleaning chips from a machine interior, workpiece, or workholding setup.

The unit uses multiple spray nozzles on its circumference, providing a steady and pressurized stream. Each nozzle can be plugged or opened to create customized spray patterns. Added spindle rotation ensures coolant reaches virtually everywhere inside the machine. Residing in the tool changer, the Jergens Washdown Tool is deployed periodically at scheduled intervals. This automation shortens cleaning time and supports long machining cycles, even lights-out manufacturing when no operator is present.
