Quick change collet chuck

The hybrid COMOT-AZ quick change collet chuck features diameter capacities of 42mm, 65mm, and 100mm to accommodate a large variety of workpieces. Ideal for bar and tubular stock machining requiring multiple changeovers, COMOT-AZ can be used in three ways:

• O.D. machining using standard collets

• For greater accuracy using high precision collets with COMOT-AZ/PA

• Transformed into expanding mandrel for I.D. clamping using the EMX series

COMOT-AZ provides low deformation clamping of thin-walled workpieces and offers a large selection of standard collets available in round, square, hexagonal, and special configurations. The optional COMOT-AZ/PA enables users to change from a standard collet to a high-precision collet for holding workpieces from 3mm to 100mm with accuracy and repeatability. The EMX series extension mandrel is also available for internal workpiece fixturing.

For automated loading, COMOT-AZ also provides air sensing to ensure the part is seated properly before the machine cycle starts. Other features include radial fine adjustment and a case-hardened body and internal parts for high resistance and longer life.

High speed vertical precision center

The VL30 Series high-speed vertical machining centers feature high thrust, high-efficiency linear motor drives for the X-, Y-, and Z-axis for machining hardened tool steel alloy components. The 5-axis versions use direct-drive rotary axes for smooth and controlled complex contouring. Delivering up to 1,574ipm cutting feed rate with 1G acceleration/deceleration, it provides superior speed and motion control in performing high-speed point milling in multi-axis contouring applications. For accuracy, the precision glass scale feedback system detects 0.1µm increments.

The VL30 line has a proven track record of machining high-precision mold inserts for a wide variety of applications for medical and other demanding manufacturers.

The upgraded offerings include advanced features for process automation, workpiece, and tool handling, and the Fanuc 31i-B with i-HMI operator interface makes it easier to realize improved output and profitability.

Available in three models, the VL 30-5X 5-axis machining center, VL 30, and larger VL 50 3-axis versions, the series features a 15hp 50,000rpm spindle accepting HSK E25 tooling for precise roughing and ultra-fine finishing. An integrated tool changer holds up to 90 tools.

Custom design, build with quick-change workholding

To address the rising demand for custom solutions, Jergens’ Custom Design and Build team looks for opportunities to create high-density fixtures to get as many parts as possible in the machining envelope.

With a history of offering customized solutions, Jergens has developed a streamlined process for faster turnaround that can otherwise be a deterrent to a custom solution. That process has specific milestones that begin with identifying the need and proceeding through concept, approval, manufacturing, and ultimately delivery.

In addition to presenting custom design and build capabilities, Jergens will show and demonstrate many modular workholding innovations. Included will be the 5CV self-centering vise; Quick-Loc pallets, receivers, and risers; Ball Lock mounting system; ZPS clamping; OK-Vise clamps; cast iron tooling columns; and the in-line machine washdown tool.

5-axis machining applications

The GROB G350 features a dynamic rotary table with a 200rpm B-axis with infinite rotation, and a maximum rotation of 360° in the A-axis. This G350 Generation 2 machining center is equipped with a Siemens 840D sl control, 16,000rpm spindle, 117-tool holding capacity, and an HSK-A63 tool interface. The GROB G350 shown at PMTS will feature a pyramid fixture holding three parts at once – an aerospace, medical, and mold part.

Multiple machining demonstrations will be held throughout each day on the G350 5-axis universal machine, including a medical bone plate machined from titanium, demonstrating roughing and finishing on the same machine to produce a complete part in one setup. The finished part will be held by two small tabs, so part removal by hand is fast and easy. Challenging features can be reached easily with the GROB G350’s part accessibility via its tapered spindle nose and positive angle reaching capability.
