With the introduction of the Quick Turn Nexus 250-II MSY, off-center Y-axis cutting along with a more powerful CNC make for complete multi-tasking, metalworking operations on Mazak's Nexus CNC turning center.

With advanced integral spindle/motor technology, spindle output on the new Quick Turn Nexus 250-II MSY produces 35 hp (4,000 rpm) on the main turning spindle (10-in. chuck), resulting in heavy-duty metal removal and high-speed cutting of aluminum and other non-ferrous materials. The second spindle has a 6-in. chuck size, 15-hp output, and 6,000-rpm maximum spindle speed. The additional rotary tool spindle for milling has 7.5 hp output and 4,500-rpm maximum speed (with 6,000 rpm optional).

Both rotary tools and turning tools can be mounted at any position of the 12-station drum turret, and quick- change toolholders can be loaded or unloaded with a single turn of a wrench. Travels in X, Y, and Z are 10.2 in., 4.0 in. (±2.0 in.) and 31.3 in., respectively.

A workpiece can be quickly transferred between the first and second headstock to complete machining operations. For smooth, continuous operation, the workpiece can be automatically oriented in phase. Rapid traverse is 1,181 ipm in the X- axis, 826 ipm in Y, and 1,299 ipm in Z. A high-gain servo control makes acceleration/ deceleration fast and virtually vibration-free. The single-step, 12-tool position turret indexes a time of 0.25 sec. / position, minimizing idle time and increasing productivity.

High-speed data processing is readily accomplished by the new Mazatrol Matrix Nexus CNC. Software and hardware advances in the Mazatrol Matrix Nexus include powerful internal computing speed from a new 64-bit CPU that supports 16 million pulse encoders on each linear axis for sub-micron resolution. According to Mazak, feedrates for machining complex curved surfaces are two times faster than the previous CNC. Additionally, new servo control technology minimizes vibration.

New software capabilities make the Mazatrol Matrix Nexus easier and safer to program and operate. A unique Voice- Advisor verbally informs operators of machine alarms and switch settings in manual operation. Enhanced 3D simulations aid the operator in identifying and correcting any interference conditions and in running part program simulations while the machine is operating.

Another benefit of the QTN 250- II MSY is the "Tool Eye" automatic tool-presetting arm, which is part of the machine's standard list of features. To ensure accuracy and a reducton in setup time, simply bring the tool tip into contact with the Tool Eye and offset the tool nose position. Tool measurement and data registration are done automatically, and the Tool Eye also updates and constantly monitors tool wear.
